MLS in Vegas: Week 15

Week 12 Results:

I’ll go into detail on these and update my season totals later. For now, the important thing to note is that I went 1 of 3 in week 12 and my earnings in 2015 are somewhere around -$1,100. I took a couple weeks off from the series to refresh my mind, and while I am not ready to fully recommit with updated stats for the series or weekly features like the “Draw Watch,” I am ready to make some picks in an attempt to climb out of the very large hole I am in.

Montreal are +$210 to win in Yankee Stadium on Saturday, a seemingly good value as the Impact have won four of their last five. But beware, Montreal picked up their first road win under manager Frank Klopas last week in Columbus – Klopas is roughly midway through his second full season in Montreal, so at this rate, the Impact aren’t due for another road win until 2016. However, NYCFC are struggling to score goals and manage results, so a red hot Montreal team coming to town at better than 2-to-1 has some intrigue.

New England are -$120 to win at home versus an enigmatic Chicago Fire side (+$300 for the win). If I was doing a Stay Away games section this week, this match would certainly feature in it. Chicago have the attacking talent to win on any given weekend in MLS while the Revs are win-less in their last six and missing Jermaine Jones. I don’t see Chicago winning, but I’d keep my money away from New England in this one.

Columbus Crew are +$115 to beat the Galaxy in Ohio on Saturday night. Columbus are coming off a nightmare week in which they lost 3-0 at Philly and suffered a 2-1 home loss to the Impact (I mentioned above this was Montreal’s first road win in MLS since 2013!). But the Crew, while inconsistent, have proven themselves a potent and explosive side this season. The Galaxy still haven’t found their championship rhythm and will be without reigning MVP Robbie Keane (Irish National team). Plus, it was just last August that LA visited MAPFRE Stadium and got whacked 4-1. Like Golden State in game 4 of the NBA Finals, Columbus will come out prepared and ready to compete in this one.

Dallas find themselves at +$300 to win as they head to CenturyLink for a bout with the stronger and more complete Seattle Sounders (-$120 for the win). FCD will fight hard and a draw seems like an achievable goal, but the roster has simply been ravaged by injuries, suspensions and international call ups. It’s difficult to speculate how weak the Hoops lineup will be come Saturday night in Seattle (the attack could be strong with Castillo and Blas Perez possibly returning to the starting XI), but it’s likely that whichever back four coach Oscar Pareja chooses will lack experience and continuity – a bad sign when visiting the Sounders.

One of my biggest regrets so far in this series was not placing a wager on SKC to beat Dallas two weeks ago (SKC won 4-0). So one of my biggest motivations for posting here in week 15 and trying make up some ground is the promise offered by this match. A Sounders win would be great for the MLSinVegas series, a Dallas win would make my heart sing, so smart money says this game ends in a draw. Dallas never win in Seattle, but they do sometimes manage a draw.

Expansion club OCSC are -$115 favorites to beat DC United (+$275 to win) in the Citrus Bowl on Sunday. I can’t see where the goals will come from for the Lions because their new found talisman, 20 year old forward Cyle Larin, is off on international duty bagging goals for the Canadians instead. This one is mostly a Stay Away match for me, but I can understand a risk taker considering the -$250 line for the draw or DC for the win. DC have beaten this club twice already, and if they have team MVP Fabian Espindola in the fold, I can’t see Orlando outscoring them in this one.

***Official Week 15 Picks***

  • $300 on CLB to win at +115
  • $400 on SEA to win at -120
